.I Don Port oo..
Nigerian actor Hafiz Oyetoro widely called Saka has undoubtedly carved a niche for himself in the entertainment industry. From his comic roles in movies, drama series and sitcoms, to his humorous advert campaigns for telecommunication company Etisalat, Saka is now the rave of the moment.
However, the new MTN Portability Advert featuring Saka is generating controversies and keeping tongues wagging in no small measure. The MTN TV commercial starts with Saka dressed in green traditional attire – which probably stands for Etisalat, only to transform into a bright yellow attire - MTN, as he leads a music band dancing and singing: "I don port o, I don port go MTN. I don upgrade to MTN..."
The question on many lips about Saka switch from Etisalat to MTN is: didn’t Saka have an exclusive contract with Etisalat or was he being paid per campaign? Sources have revealed that Saka was never signed on fully as a brand ambassador (Big mistake on Etisalat’s part) and that he got a mouth-watering sum of N20million from MTN for the swap.
Sources also informed that Etisalat is coming out with a bang in response to the MTN port advert. Watch out for other port adverts too. Airtel stylishly subbed MTN in their porting advert, they used a yellow figure 3.
ETISALAT is rumoured to be angry by MTN’s action and they’ve been requesting briefs from leading agencies like X3M to do a counter ad. MTN Nigeria commercials are handled by digital and creative agency, DDB Lagos.
As we all watch the drama unfold, we hope consumers get value and quality service from this brand clashe and competition.
