 It’s good news! The Lagos State Government has established a parastatal, LASODA, which seeks to uphold the law on the rights of all persons living with any form of disability [PWDs] in the State by safeguarding them against all forms of discrimination and giving them equal rights and opportunities.


The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs [LASODA] was established by the Lagos State Special People’s Law [LSSPL] of June 2011. The Governing Board was inaugurated by the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola [SAN] on the 9th of July 2012 and charged with implementing the Law. People with Disabilities (PWD) can take advantage of the LASODA initiative in the following areas…

 RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE OFFICE: 
The Lagos State Special People’s Law stipulates 19 functions of the office which can be summarized by these 8 categories;
1. Advocacy, Public enlightenment and Reorientation of the public.
2. Registration and coordination of associations of PWDs in Lagos State. Establishment of a PWDs database to ensure proper planning.
3. Collaboration with Ministries, Parastatals and corporate bodies in respect of building codes, all government policies, programs and activities. Liaising with international organizations to ensure the best practices available.
4. Issuance of directives and guidelines for the education, social development and welfare of PWDs, including preventive and curative exercises.
5. Issuance of guidelines and directives to the relevant authority on special sports and to special schools for PWDs.
6. Issuance and revocation of certificates of disability and customized insignia to be used at parking lots.
7. Ensuring compliance with the Law by receiving complaints from PWDs, investigation, prosecution and sanctions in appropriate cases of any violation of the Law. Actualising the enjoyment of all rights of PWDs in the Law.
8. Establishment and promotion of schools, vocational and rehabilitation centres for the development of PWDs.

LASODA REGISTRATION GUIDELINES FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DISABILITIES [PWD’s] IN LAGOS STATE
1.    LASODA PWDs registration commences on the 20th of November, 2014 and it continues.
2.    General registration with Lagos State Residents Registration Agency [LASRRA] is a pre-requisite for registration with LASODA.
3.    After general registration with LASRRA, take your temporary LASRRA registration card to the nearest LASRRA registration point of your local government or local council development area headquarter and collect LASODA PWDs registration form for free.
4.    Alternatively, you can download a copy of the LASODA PWDs registration form by visiting www.lasoda.org.ng  or Click HERE to download
5.    Affix a passport size photograph of yourself to the form.
6.    Take the form to a qualified medical doctor in any government-owned hospital [Federal or State], in Lagos State to fill and for evaluation.
7.    Otherwise, take the form to the medical officer of health of your local government or local council development area headquarter.
8.    Return the LASODA PWDs registration form to the same LASRRA registration point of your local government or local council development area headquarter after evaluation.
9.    LASODA will issue disability certificates [Temporary or Permanent] to only PWDs in Lagos State that adhere strictly to above enumerated registration guidelines.
10 The disability certificate is an entitlement to all the enjoyable benefits of Lagos State Special People’s Law such as issuance of blue badge/disabled parking permit, 10% [Ten per cent] seat reservation for PWDs in public transportation system etc.
